Year 8 Cricket Final 5th July 2007
YEAR 8 CRICKETERS WIN KENT CUP
On the 5th July 2007, Borden Grammar School Year 8 cricket team played The Skinners’ School in the inaugural Under 13 Kent Cup Final. With a wet pitch and very overcast conditions Borden captain, Josh Hunt, won the toss and elected to bowl. This turned out to be the best decision Josh had made all year.
A superb opening spell by Hunt (4 over’s, 4 maidens, 2 wickets), was well assisted by Town and Baker saw Skinners struggle to 29 for 4 from 12 over’s. The Skinners’ School found the going tough through their 20 over’s, largely due to a superb bowling and fielding performance from all of the Borden boys. The opposition posted a target of 72, a run rate of 3.5 for Borden to chase.
Once again the opening pair of J. Hunt and D. Pumfrett got Borden Grammar School off to a great start putting on 48 before Pumfrett fell LBW to Dennehy, probably Skinners best bowler.
Borden then lost Kitney (6) and Baker (5) in quick succession and the nerves started to creep in with The Skinners School on a high and possibly thinking that victory could be their’s when C. Town came to the crease and set about knocking of the runs with Captain Hunt. Both batsmen looked comfortable and with 9 balls and needing 3 runs to win Josh Hunt steered the ball behind square on the leg side for four runs and Borden Grammar had completed a fantastic win over the more favoured Skinners School. Hunt carried his bat for a superb 28 not out and Town calmly assisted his captain.
It was a fantastic effort by all of the Year 8 team. They played some great cricket this season and left the best performance until last. They were superbly led by Josh Hunt who was well assisted by his Vice Captain Dan Pumfrett. The team spirit throughout the season was fantastic and this shone through especially in the final.
A big thanks must go to the support of the boys parents who braved some very unsporting weather to come out and cheer their sons on throughout the season.
Finally all that is left to say is congratulations to the team Hunt, Pumfrett, Kitney, Baker, Town, Hayes, Kemp, Blackbourne, Rushworth, Underdown, Smith, Philips and Butcher. It has been a pleasure coaching you all this year and I wish you all the best next year and in the future.
WELL DONE!

Kelly Holmes Visit 20/06/07
On Wednesday 20th June the staff and students at Borden were lucky enough to have a visit from double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes. Kelly visited as part of her role as ‘National School Sport Champion’ a post she has held for 2 years with support from the Youth Sport Trust. Kelly was in school for just 1½ hours but managed to see and speak to approximately 200 students.
During the visit Kelly observed PE lessons and spoke to students on a 1:1 basis stopping for photos when asked. The lessons she observed were a year 12 coursework session, a year 8 tennis lesson and a group of pupils from Regis Manor primary school who were completing fitness tests at the school. She finished her visit by addressing the whole of year 9 before their PE lesson and talked to them about what it is like to compete at the highest level and that if any of them had aspirations to take sport further in the future they could achieve their dream as Kelly has done. Hopefully the visit will live long in the memory of those involved and act as a tool to inspire and motivate those students to strive for excellence in all areas of their school life.
The visit was made possible through Borden’s Specialist Status in Sport and the links between the school and the Youth Sport Trust. Hopefully we will have further visits from international sports stars in the future in an aim to inspire students to aim for the top both in sport and at an academic level.
Mr C Brinn
Director of PE & School Sport

Staff v Prefects Cricket Friday 14th July
Staff v Prefects Cricket – Friday 14th July
The staff team got off to the perfect start when in the second over they dismissed danger man Alex Campbell for 1 when he edged a fine Whiting away swinger and was caught behind by Brinn. Joe Meaning had a flurry at the top of the prefect order hitting opening bowler Rivers back over his head for 2 sixes. Rivers hit back in his last over when he removed Joe Meaning with a fine delivery hitting the top of off stump. In came Kit Walker-Grice and Rivers soon sent him back with a superb in swinging yorker which demolished the leg stump. It was then left to Jason Waitt to add the runs for the prefect team, he batted well and scored an important 51 before being caught in the last over by Rivers off the bowling of Good. Waitt was supported well at the other end by the unorthodox Wood and the patient John King. The last prefect batsman to enter the middle was Matt Moore who didn’t face a delivery. The prefect team ended their 20 overs with a score of 120 for 5.
The prefect total left the staff with a target of 121 to win at a rate of just over a run a ball. The opening pair of Ryan and O’Neill got the innings off to a solid start with the score on 19 when Ryan was adjudged LBW with the first ball of the 5th over off the bowling of Campbell. This bought Brinn to the crease to join O’Neill however O’Neill soon followed his opening partner back to the pavilion when he was given LBW off Meaning. Mr Reynolds then strolled confidently to the middle to join Brinn where the pair put on a fine 3rd wicket stand of 70 to ease the staff closer to victory. When Brinn fell for 45, LBW to Meaning the big hitting Whiting came to the crease and soon got into action launching Jason Waitt for a mighty six into the neighbouring gardens. Waitt had his revenge when he clean bowled Whiting with his next delivery. Mr Artingstoll then entered the fray with just 4 needed for victory, he planted his front foot confidently down the track and struck a clean blow to ensure a staff victory.
The game was enjoyed by prefects, staff and a few spectators and raised £50 for Sport Relief.
