History

 SUBJECT History
ADMISSIONS It is advantageous to have studied GCSE but not a prerequisite. It is more important that you have a genuine interest in History. However if you have done History you should have achieved a grade B. If you haven't done History your English Language grade should be a B.
 SYLLABUS OCR HISTORY
 COURSE

The AS / A2 course builds upon some of the work started at GCSE. For example a key element of the AS study is includes German History and British History.  Also GCSE studies are continued onto A2 level with the study of American History and the Causes of the Second World War. There is not any coursework at AS level but at A2 level it encompasses 30 % of the award.

A successful historian will know how people tick, what motivates them, what they think and feel. You will be able to gather and read different types of information; you will be able to look carefully at information and check it for bias or propaganda; you will be able to read maps, graphs and other diagrams; you will be able to communicate clearly and you will learn to express yourself orally and on paper.

There are two different A’ level courses offered.  They are both very similar; allocation to each option will depend on timetable choice.

 CAREERS

Even if you don’t want to work with old documents, History is a useful and often necessary subject for a lot of careers and not just the obvious ones. It is a useful qualification for Lawyers, Journalists, TV researchers and Police. Even if you are aiming to be a scientist, all scientists have to communicate effectively. Their projects are not isolated but carried out in a context that relates to the whole of society. Employers and universities like to see that you follow a balanced course. History could be important in creating that balance.
