The aims of this course are to encourage pupils to:
1. develop and apply their knowledge, skills and understanding of physical education through selected practical activities,
2. develop their knowledge and understanding of the different factors that affect participation and performance,
3. understand the role of rules and conventions in selected games activities,
4. promote their understanding of the health benefits and risks associated with taking part in games activities,
5. develop the skills necessary to analyse and improve performance,
6. support their personal and social development through adopting different roles in games activities when working with others.
The course consists of two sections:
Practical (including written coursework) – 60%
This is assessed internally by the subject teacher and moderated by the exam board. The activities studied will be football, rugby, hockey, basketball, volleyball, tennis, cricket and rounders. Badminton, squash and golf may also be studied when circumstances allow.
Exam – 40%
This takes the form of a two hour paper taken at the end of year 11. This exam covers the following topics;
· Health, Fitness and factors affecting performance,
· Principles of Training,
· Factors affecting individual performance and participation,
· Social and cultural factors affecting participation.
